October 2008 Meeting Highlights
June P. Graves and Margaret “Peggy” Martinez spoke to APWN’s October meeting on the timely topic of Spend Less/Save More & Build a Secure Future. June and Peggy, both CPAs with 20 years’ experience, are principals in the CPA firm Dukes & Graves, Ltd. in Annandale, VA. The purpose of their talk was to increase our financial literacy and encourage us to plan ahead and make small changes in spending now that will add up to significant savings in later years. To build a secure future, June and Peggy made the following suggestions:
- Make small changes and bank the money you save. Make your own lattes, rent movies instead of going out once a week, use tap or filtered water instead of buying bottled water, and pack a lunch. Without sacrifices or major changes in lifestyle, you could save up to $1,700 per year. In 20 years, that could grow to $75,000!
- Estimate your financial needs in retirement. Include housing, utilities, medical/dental costs, travel/vacations, gifts/donations, and other expenses you typically incur. Be realistic about how much you will need, and remember that you may need resources for 25 years or more. (Several of the Web sites listed below include retirement calculators.)
- Remember to take inflation into account in estimating your needs. A fixed income can shrink rapidly in buying power, even at a fairly low rate of inflation.
- Determine your income sources for retirement. For households earning between $50,000 and $150,000, the typical breakdown is: 25% from Social Security, 15% from pensions, and 60% from savings and retirement accounts. Part-time jobs are another possible income source.
- Pay down your debts as quickly as you can, especially credit card debt. Paying down debt is like saving.
Spotlight speaker Michelle “Mickie” Bouma operates the Insurance Connection Corporation, a commercial insurance agency for businesses, including home-based businesses, in VA, MD, and DC. Her agency in Alexandria, VA offers many types of coverage, including property and general liability insurance, bonds, workman’s compensation coverage, insurance for vehicles and cargo, and insurance on officers and executives.
Mickie has more than 25 years of experience in helping business owners and managers obtain the best insurance for their needs. Her best leads come from accounting firms, commercial property management firms, and firms that deal with investments.
